Empowerment of Marginalized CommunityHumanist Association of Nepal (HUMAN) has been
carrying out a number of community empowerment activities and campaign since
its inception in 1997. The empowerment activities and the campaign
mostly fall within the domain of spreading humanist consciousness and discouraging
the superstitious and paranormal practices induced by theistic, religious
and supernatural belief. HUMAN has carried out a number of research
and campaign along with some developmental activities targeted in the communities
that are socio-economically marginalized and are easily credulous to the
superstitious and paranormal practices.
The empowerment of Satar community through humanist campaign and developmental activities in the eastern region of Nepal is one of such targeted projects executed by HUMAN through the financial assistance of International Humanist and Ethical Union (IHEU), London. The empowerment activities have demonstrated very positive impacts in the changes of the attitude and behavior of the Satar community. The frequency of visiting nearby health care center and health posts has increased significantly. Health consciousness among Satar women especially in general cleanliness, sanitation and water born diseases have increased. Interest in vegetable growing and income generating activities among women have increased and motivated the community to be more creative and forward looking. There is a growing realization among the individuals in the community that education is the most important factor that can bring positive changes in the community and, therefore, the children need to go to school. Humanists should continue to support the developmental activities aimed at the empowerment of socio-economically marginalized communities.
